Toughened

Toughened glass is a type of safety glass that undergoes a toughening process in a furnace at a temperature around 600 degrees.

Not only is toughened glass almost five times stronger than annealed glass, it also breaks in a much safer manner during an impact.

Under the AS2208 fragmentation test, toughened glass must shatter into small particles to meet Grade A safety glass requirements. With 4mm toughened glass, for example, the number of particles must be at least 30 per 250mm square glass sample.

Ramarex always uses toughened glass in all windows and doors as standard sourced, from accredited Australian glass manufacturers and suppliers. The thermal performance of toughened glass is the same that of annealed glass.

Laminated

Laminated glass is another type of safety glass often used in construction and renovation projects.

It consists of two panes of annealed glass bonded together with either EVA, PVB or SGP film. When tested in accordance with AS2208, it must break safely and also pass the boil test. In terms of thermal performance, clear laminated glass only marginally outperforms clear annealed and toughened glass. However, it is probably the best product for addressing noise, safety and security concerns.

Laminated glass is extensively used in automotive windshields, especially in the front windshield to provide the desired level of safety. It provides maximum protection against impact while also eliminating shattering, since the film interlayer holds both panes of glass together.

Laminated glass clearly provides outstanding security because it takes much longer to break in through laminated glass alone, and even more so when combined with other panes of glass in a double or triple glazed unit. Ramarex windows and doors with laminated glass can substantially improve safety and security of your home and eliminate the need for expensive window roller shutters and additional security doors.

Low-E glass

Low-e or low emissivity glass is the top performer when it comes to controlling heat and cold transfer.

By having a special nano coating, this clear glass improves the u-value of a window and door system by around 30%. Low-e glass blocks more heat in summer but also retains heat in winter, particularly important in colder climates such as Victoria.

Additionally, low-e glass provides better infrared and UV light protection to households furnishings and flooring. To further improve thermal performance, low-e glass can be combined with argon gas and warm edge spacers.

Annealed/
float

Annealed glass, also called float glass, is the original form of glass when it comes. This is the most common type of clear glass found in Australian homes today.

When broken, annealed glass creates sharp pieces and has a high risk of cutting during an impact. In line with Australian standards, this type of glass cannot be used in doors and bathrooms and there are some restrictions about its use in low level glazed windows. In the above instances, safety glass must be used.
